Timing chains

Timing chains control the opening and closing of the engine valves and require engine oil lubrication from the engine oil to operate efficiently, connecting the camshaft to the crankshaft.

Blue print said: “Timing chains have a relatively long service life and are wear-resistant compared to other components.

“It is vital that the timing chain is replaced at intervals recommended by the manufacturer, as failure can cause severe damage to the engine.”

Timing belts

Timing belts are an alternative drive to the timing chain and are the most popular drive in modern vehicle engines, connecting the camshaft to the crankshaft.

Blue Print said: “They are quiet, smooth, lightweight and don’t need lubrication.

“However, the belt is prone to snapping which causes engine damage so it is vital that high quality parts are used.”

Camshaft

Driven by the crankshaft, the camshaft ensures valve operation is in time with the piston and the drive is transmitted from the crankshaft to the camshaft via a timing chain or belt.

Cylinder head

Sitting on top of the cylinder block, the head is sealed together with a cylinder head gasket.

The cylinder head contains the valves spark plugs or fuel injectors depending on the type of vehicle.

Valves

Valves are operated by the camshaft and control the flow of gas, allowing the air and fuel mixture to swap with the burnt gases via inlet and outlet ports.

Blue Print says these valves are subjected to high temperatures, which is why only the highest quality replacement parts will avoid premature wear.

Oil seals and gaskets

Oil seals and gaskets seal against oil, air and water.
