Warning on PSA 1.6HDi turbocharger issues Garages are warned there has been an exceptionally high return rate of turbos which are NOT covered by warranty.
BTN have given an overview below for quick reference but if in doubt please read the critical instructions in full, included below
This is the latest in a series of articles highlighting potential issues BTN have identified, to save you time and hassle.
This article concerns the PSA 1.6HDi turbocharged engine, fitted to several Peugeot, Citroen, Ford, Fiat, Volvo and MINI and Mazda models from 2004 onwards.
Eliminate carbon deposits
Although they are usually strong, reliable performers, BTN have experienced a high return rate of turbochargers from these engines, caused by enginerelated issues. The primary cause is carbon build-up, with carbon deposits circulating in the lubrication system leading to premature failure.
Follow the critical instructions
To minimise this risk, it’s vital you follow the procedure in their critical instructions, available from the Vehicle Alert section in Turbo Tech, on the BTN Turbo website. You’ll also see links to the critical instructions when you click on any of the relevant applications in our online catalogue.
A clean lubrication system is essential
Complete cleanliness of the lubrication system is essential whenever you replace a turbo, and it’s of paramount importance when working on the PSA 1.6 HDi engine. As the oil feed pipes are especially vulnerable to blockage, BTN only sell this turbo with replacement oil feed pipes and fittings, which must be used.
Carbon deposits are very difficult to eliminate from this engine, so despite your best efforts, you may still encounter a failure.
