Have your trailer lights stopped working?

If your trailer lights have stopped working it could be for a number of reasons, from faulty wiring to a dead bulb. Luckily here at Universal Components we have all of the equipment to ensure that your trailer lights will be beaming in the night again soon. Here’s some information on how to diagnose the problem and find the suitable replacement.

Testing your trailer electrics

If you’re having trouble with your trailer lights then you’ll need to test a range of the electrics that run through the vehicle. Some of the parts which can become faulty over time include: -

Trailer Lights

If just one of your trailer lights has failed than this indicates a more localised problem and can usually be fixed fairly easily. The first thing you should do to remedy the problem is find the correct replacement bulb for the trailer lights. At Universal Components they have a vast range of parts suitable for all models of trucks and trailers. You can find them by searching for the part number in their search bar.

If a new trailer light bulb doesn’t fix the problem then this might indicate a problem with the connection. Further electrical tests should be done on the connection to the bulb and the wiring immediately surrounding the connection. If the light’s mounting is loose then this can cause a faulty connection in itself and you should re-secure it before examining it further.

Plug Sockets

A faulty plug socket will usually cause a chain of lights, or even the electrics for the whole of the trailer to fail. Luckily fitting a new plug will usually remedy the problem and we have a full range of these on our trailer electrics section. Faulty plug sockets can be caused by a range of issues, including the plug socket becoming dirty and grimed up after thousands of miles on the road. Similarly the plugs connections may degrade over time.

Wiring

Faulty wires can be much harder to locate and can sometimes require the whole of a trailer rewiring. A faulty wire may cause just one light bulb to fail or it may cause the complete trailer’s electrics to fail. Luckily Universal Components have miles of wiring for both truck and trailer electrics. Faulty wires can be caused by natural degrading, damage from cargo if the wire is exposed or damage from pests.

Fuses

One of the most common issues causing trailer lights to fail is a blown fuse. You should always keep a full batch of fuses on hand to fix this issue straight away. You can find a full range of fuses in the trailer electrics section with them usually coming in packs of 10 or 50. Trailer fuses are a trucks defence from the entire electrics burning which is they we only stock trusted fuses.
