Mike Bushell (BTCC) - Morris Lubricants MLR brake fluid review

The British Tour Car Championship is one of the most popular & competitive motorsports in the UK. With cars being tested to max of their ability. Making his return to the championship after a successful season and securing 2nd in UK Renault Clio Cup in 2017, Mike Bushell tells us how Morris Lubricants have come to his aid to improve his braking performance.

My progress in the 2018 British Touring Car Championship has been held back with a less than perfect braking system in the first 3 weekends of the season. 

With the high energy racing that is associated with the championship, close quarters racing puts a lot of stress through the braking system and any weaknesses with high temperatures can cause a drop in performance if any one component is sub-optimal.

All of the teams and cars within the BTCC use the same AP braking system, and with the technical regulations closely governing cooling, we have experimented with brake fluid.

Prior to the Brands Hatch test day on the 31st of May we had tried two other brands of fluid over the course of the first three race weekends. Neither was able to give a consistent feel in the pedal, either feeling firm at colder temperatures and fading away, or remaining soft and suffering with a lack of feel and locking brakes regardless of temperature.

Morris Lubricants brought along their new MLR Racing Brake Fluid for me and the team to test and analyse on the 31st of May. Brands Hatch is the perfect place for brake testing as it doesn't have the high demand nature of circuits like Oulton Park where mechanical components such as the pads and discs wear extremely quickly, nor does it have long straights between corners to cool the braking system sufficiently.

After a full day's running with plenty of other cars out on track, meaning that clean air was hard to come by, the braking system on my VW Passat performed faultlessly and the pedal retained its initial firmness and feel without fade. Even as we remained on the same brake pad all day, far beyond typical mileage.

Because of this I shall be using the Morris lubricants MLR Racing Brake Fluid for the rest of the 2018 season and look forward to renewed consistency and performance.
