Gas Springs – aka Boot / Tailgate / Bonnet Struts
Gas springs are made up of a chamber tube, piston, piston rod and end fittings. The chamber contains highly pressurised nitrogen gas and as the spring compresses there is less volume in the tube, forcing gas through valves in the piston and thereby increasing the suspension. The spring also contains oil which lubricates the seals, piston and piston rod; it also provides a damping effect when the spring nears full extension.
The rubber seals will naturally corrode and crack over time, allowing the gas (and oil) to escape. The corrosion of the seal also allows dirt particles to get inside the spring – the dirt collects on the piston rod and mixes with the gas and oil, causing further damage to the seal.
The Kilen range, available from FPS, covers most makes and models of European and Asian vehicles. Additional parts are available from Blue Print to give maximum coverage of the UK car parc.
