Performance Motor Oil changes explained
Comma have recently revised the Performance Motor Oil (PMO) range and this includes two new products as well as a range rationalisation to make it even easier to choose the right product for the right vehicle. The bulletin they have created will help you to understand some of the technical changes that have happened.
What are the two new products?
These are low viscosity oils which are Voltech 0W30 and Pro-NRG 0W20. These help to increase the PMO coverage to almost 99% of the UK vehicle parc. You will see these products being recommended on their new look website for the appropriate application.
Which products have been withdrawn?
The products that have been withdrawn are Syner-D 5W-40, Diesel-Lite 10W-40 and Eurodiesel 15W-40.
So what do I recommend where these products were once used?
You will see from their website where, for example, Syner-D was once recommended, it has now been replaced with the new look Syner-G. The diagrams on the bulletin illustrate this point.
Therefore:
Where Syner-G 5W-40 is recommended for a diesel vehicle, existing stocks of Syner-D 5W-40 can be used.
Where Eurolite 10W-40 is recommended for a diesel vehicle, existing stocks of Diesel-Lite 10W-40 can be used.
Where XT2000 15W-40 is recommended for a diesel vehicle, existing stocks of Eurodiesel 15W-40 can be used.
Note — this only applies to the above mentioned products.
Does the Comma 100% Compatibility Guarantee still apply?
Yes, the Comma 100% Compatibility Guarantee will still apply, subject to the usual terms and conditions. If you have any doubt about this please contact us in the usual way.
I thought that petrol and diesel cars needed different oils?
The most current passenger vehicle ACEA specifications are often seen being quoted together, for example A5/B5. A is for petrol engines and B for diesel. The C sequences apply to both petrol and diesel powered passenger vehicles.
Also for Original Equipment Manfacturer’s specifications, these are often quoted together, for example VW 504 00 and 507 00.
504 00 is for petrol engines
507 00 is for diesel engines
The specification parameters for petrol and diesel engines have become much more aligned in recent years and so it has become much easier to combine their specifications on a particular product, although some OEMs continue to distinguish between the two. If you are in doubt as to whether a product is suitable for the petrol or diesel variant of a particular vehicle, use the Comma Application Guide to verify the recommendation, it is based on data from the OEM and can be relied upon to provide true and accurate recommendations.
