Given that summer has got off to a promising start,
with relatively long-range forecasts painting the picture of a continued period of hot temperatures and plenty of sunshine, it is important that we are as prepared as we can be to enjoy it…..the motorist included. And whilst we would all probably prefer to be basking or lounging in the sun, the reality, for motorists anyway, is that they are likely to spend a significant amount of time behind the wheel, whether driving for business or pleasure.
It is against this backdrop, and the necessity to make the driver’s environment as pleasurable as possible, that leading aftermarket component supplier, ACDelco is championing the requirement for garages and workshops to remind their customers of the need to change their cabin filters regularly. Indeed given that pollen levels are now at their highest, this is particularly important.
As Director of ACDelco’s UK and European aftermarket operation, Lee Quinney comments: “Cabin filters represent a win-win situation and should be viewed as such. Not only does changing cabin filters regularly help preserve the integrity of a vehicle’s interior, making life far more enjoyable for both the driver and passengers, it also represents a great opportunity to realise a very consistent profit stream and one that shouldn’t be overlooked.
“There may be nothing new in this, however it is everyone’s responsibility, the manufacturer’s, supplier’s and garage and workshop’s, to drive home to the motorist, in whatever way possible, of the need to change a cabin filter either annually or at the 12,000 mile mark. They should certainly be of central concern when offering customers a summer driving check and this is something we shall be putting our weight behind moving forwards,” he added.

Life without cabin filters means pollen, soot, dust and gases, as well as unpleasant odours, reach the interior of the vehicle directly, with occupants breathing in unfiltered air, complete with pollutants. It is not only exhaust emissions and industrial pollution that can significantly impair the health and well-being of the occupants, even agricultural substances such as fertilizers and liquid manure, not to mention natural irritants such as ozone, can also have a negative impact. The resulting health risks are significantly intensified by the "tunnel effect". This is caused when the vehicles ahead cause an "exhaust tunnel". The pollutants released are drawn into the vehicle interior in concentrated form resulting in pollutant concentrations that are far higher than outside the vehicle. In vehicles without a cabin air filter, concentration levels may be as much as six times higher than values at the roadside. The possible consequences include headaches, nausea and allergic reactions.
Protection and Safety
Cabin filters not only remove pollutants and gases from the air, they also protect the air conditioning system and prevent condensation on windscreens and windows.
Prolonging the service life of air conditioning system
Dirt in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems contaminates the air in a car, has a direct impact on occupant well-being, reduces the service life of air conditioning systems and results in additional cost.
Protection against condensation
Poor visibility in an automobile can lead to accidents. Often, the problem is caused by a filter that has not been replaced in line with the manufacturer’s’ recommendations. An effective cabin filter makes for good visibility and improves comfort, whilst correspondingly increasing driver safety on the road.
