A recent statement from Dave Elder of Vauxhall MasterFit has prompted the ADF’s Brian Spratt to consider referring the matter to the Office of Fair Trading.

In a press announcement Mr. Elder had been talking up the benefit to motorists of dealer servicing.  In so doing he cut across several of the rules of the Block Exemption Regulation, which allows motorists to have vehicles serviced at independent garages without invalidating their warranty.

Arguing that dealers aren’t really that expensive, Mr. Elder said, “A study by Vauxhall MasterFit found that MasterFit centres were actually cheaper in almost all service areas than many local independent garages and service centres including well known household names.” He offered several examples of Vauxhall pricing that were lower than ‘comparable’ independent offerings.
