British holidaymakers will need to download a code to hire cars abroad, as the paper counterpart is scrapped

The paper driving licence will become obsolete next month.

The paper part of the UK driving licence, which currently lists any fines and penalty points, will be abolished on June 8, 2015 as part of the DVLA’s digital move.

British holidaymakers will need to log on to the DVLA website to input their details and obtain a special code, which can be handed to hire companies to check the driver’s details.

Critics have expressed concerns and claim that the code, which only works for 72 hours, may mean that some travellers will struggle to provide details about their licence if they stay longer than three days.

There are also fears that some European companies will be unaware about the changes, as well as many British holidaymakers.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams, said: “Our research shows that, with just over a month to go before the paper counterpart to the photo-card licence disappears, 55 per cent of drivers are not aware of the planned change.”
