While interest in recycling batteries is growing, the reality is that it is a complicated process and the need to effectively manage the paperwork that accompanies each scrap battery consignment often puts businesses off. Motor Factors that do not dispose of their battery waste through the correct channels can be liable to a £10,000 fine.
But UK Batteries is keen to overcome this mild reluctance by doing all it can to make life easier for battery suppliers that also collect waste units from installers. Its new ‘scrap pads’ are designed to help ‘hazardous waste producers’ like factors to effectively document the details of the Environment Agency costs that they incur when sending batteries to be recycled.
“Although our Platinum Waste Battery Scheme is very successful and our delivery vans are collecting scrap batteries every day, we still want to make it easier for factors to dispose of the old units that they accumulate,” explained UKB marketing manager, James O’Connor. “By helping them to get their Environment Agency paperwork in order, we are making the whole recycling process easier for everyone and the more batteries that are recycled, the less the environmental impact.”
UK Batteries offers a twice-weekly collection service under its Platinum Waste Battery Scheme and will collect units from all motor factors, whether they are a customer or not. The Manchester-based company is aiming to recycle 100,000 units every year.
