Autoexpress begins campaign for information

Car magazine Auto Express has launched a campaign calling for manufacturers to publish the details of known problems with their vehicles (issue 1130).



Currently, firms only have to publicly acknowledge registered safety recalls. “For all other faults,” their leading article read, “such as reliability issues, they are able to keep owners in the dark!”



The magazine’s investigation into the secret world of technical service bulletins – documents that details the symptoms, causes and fixes for known car problems – brought to light what Auto Express describes as ‘shocking flaws in the system’, such as the Jaguar owner who had to find out from an Internet forum about a fault with his XJ8 that could lead to the engine cutting out at high speeds. IAAF monitors 'lifetime warranty'



Vauxhall has announced that its cars will be covered by a lifetime warranty, which will apply to the first owner of any Vauxhall registered after August 1 2010, and will cover the car until it reaches 100,000 miles, no matter how many years that takes.



The move is widely seen as a response to the new EU Block Exemption Regulations (BER) which entrenched the independent sectors’ ability to service vehicles during the warranty period.

New BER rules to be enforced

The vital clauses of the new Block Exemption Regulation EU 416,2010, which protect independent aftermarket businesses, will be enforced according to the new Minister of State for Business and Innovation, Mark Prisk MP.

Replying to IAAF Director Brian Spratt, who had written to both him and to Business Secretary Vince Cable, Prisk gave his assurance that the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) will continue to take seriously any infringement of competition rules, including the revised Motor Vehicle Block Exemption; and he has passed his comments to the OFT.
